AQL sampling has been the standard in quality control for decades: you inspect a sample and draw conclusions about the entire batch. It works. But is it still the best approach given today’s production demands?
AQL sampling gives you statistical confidence about a batch based on a controlled sample. It is relatively straightforward to execute, well documented in international standards and widely accepted by regulators. For products with low defect rates and limited safety criticality, AQL is often a good balance between inspection effort and assurance.
AQL sampling does not provide a guarantee at the individual product level. If your batch contains 0.5% defects but your AQL level is set at 1%, that batch passes. For pharmaceutical primary packaging components, medical devices or other products where one defect poses a patient risk, that is not an acceptable outcome.
As soon as every individual product must safely and without defects reach the end consumer, 100% inspection is the only responsible approach. Modern automated inspection systems make this possible at production speeds that manual inspection cannot keep up with — up to 1,400 parts per minute with our iM systems.
